What is Corten A grade steel?

Alloys like Copper, Nickel and a higher Phosphorus content add to its anti-corrosive properties where the Copper bonds the oxidized, shielding layer to the steel. Moreover, these steel plates rust at a slower rate than regular steel plates, as the rusty layer helps in slackening down the speed rate of corrosion.

when exposed to the atmosphere, develop a thin layer of oxide, known as ‘patina’ over the steel surface. This patina acts in the form of a protective upper film that faces acute atmospheric conditions, thereby keeping the underlying structure surface intact.

These plates form a corroded coating, orange or brown in colour, which has a mild effect. Thus, even if exposed without paint, these high strength plates are risk-free and durable. The oxidized finish given by the corroded layer gives it an unassuming look, only making it more desirable for architectural works.
